Here is where we get into the heart of the MG. The XPAG TD2 engine. It will be dirty, confusing, and a lot of fun.

Pulling the Engine How I rented a $30 per day hoist, pulled the engine (simple when the tub is removed first) and placed it on the stand for rebuilding. (8 Images)	Engine Teardown After undressing the engine it came apart easily. Components were inspected, cleaned and bagged, or set aside for rebuilding or paint. A list of parts needed for the rebuilding was made. (65 Images)	Building XPAG TD2 15613 Once I had the engine stripped, I went with Mike Segar to machine and rebuild the engine. This is the first complete XPAG he has done, but we had some very experienced sources to work with. Mike and I did the short block together at his shop. (28 Images)	Installation After building the engine, it still needed to come home for paint and to be dressed out in its accessories, including such necessary items as the oil sump and associated seals, the flywheel, tappet covers, etc. (52 Images)	Carburetors The SU H 1-1/4 carburetors are simple. About the biggest thing is getting the jets centered. Unless someone in the distant past mixed up the pistons and the dashpots, and marked everything the same... I had rebushed the shafts when I last rebuilt them, and that wasn't needed this time around. (39 Images)
Water Pump I tried to buy a new one, and then I tried to have my old one rebuilt. But Huricane Katrina passed by Mississippi, and my source on ebay didn't come through. I ordered bearings from Moss and started to figure out what to do. (20 Images)	Exhaust System I was going to tear apart and rebuild the old exhaust, but that was back when this project was simply to make a driver. Now that I'm deeper into restoration, and I realized how poorly the old exhaust fit, I've decided to install a stainless steel system. (20 Images)	Engine Start The day finally arrived to start the newly rebuilt engine. Laura and I hosted a pancake breakfast and engine start party. The engine started on the first try. But careful preparation and assistance from several Minnesota MG T Register members was required. (17 Images)	Engine Start with Coolant After the difficulties Mike had starting his engine (he is mixing his coolant with his oil) I decided to start mine with coolant installed, in case I had to pull the engine. We both used the same machinest on the block, and I wondered if perhaps my request to drill an extra cooling hole did me in... (9 Images)
